Smart urban infrastructure to connect people, places, and information in real time.

Explore Porto Beacon

Design and development of an urban signage device for the Explore Porto platform, enabling real-time access to city information through a resilient and discreet smart city infrastructure.

A city that communicates with those who walk through it

As cities become increasingly digital, the need to create seamless connections between physical space and digital information grows. The Explore Porto project, promoted by Porto City Council and the Porto Digital Association, was born with precisely this goal: to provide contextual content about heritage, culture, services, and points of interest, enriching the experience of those who live in, work in, or visit the city.

To make this information accessible within the urban space itself, a beacon-based system was developed that allows users to access content via their smartphones. Interaction can be performed via NFC, through the Explore Porto app, or by scanning the QR code integrated into the device, providing a simple, immediate, and intuitive experience.

Integrating technology, functionalizing existing urban furniture

The challenge posed to Everythink was to design a device capable of housing the beacon technology while ensuring technical performance, durability, and integration into the public space.

The equipment had to withstand weather conditions, support intensive use and potential vandalism, be easily installed on different urban supports, and allow for efficient maintenance operations. At the same time, it needed to maintain a discreet presence, avoiding visual competition with the city's architecture and heritage.

Everythink was responsible for the industrial design, mechanical development, and preparation for the industrialization of the device, transforming a technological component into an element capable of naturally integrating into the urban infrastructure.

The formal concept of the beacon was inspired by the most distinctive graphic element of the Porto Municipality's visual identity: the dot in its logo. This reference allowed for a subtle connection between the visual language of the digital platform and the physical object distributed throughout the city.

Compact, robust, and timeless in its geometry, the device adapts to different urban contexts without compromising the perception of the surrounding space. The project demonstrates how industrial design can add value to smart city solutions, reconciling technological, functional, and aesthetic requirements in an infrastructure prepared to evolve with the city's digital services.

More than just an electronic device, the Explore Porto Beacon embodies the connection between the physical city and the digital city. By enabling contextual access to information through technologies like NFC and QR Code, it integrates into a platform that brings citizens and visitors closer to the places around them, demonstrating how design can make technology more accessible, more robust, and practically invisible in the urban experience.
